Curved Shaft
Loud popping noise coming from underside of 1998 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4X4?
My 1998 Jeep Cherokee makes a loud thump when shifted from drive to reverse and from reverse to drive especially with the wheel turned to the extreme left or extreme right (much louder than a u-joint), and it shakes when I take a curve. I'm pretty good with car repairs but I haven't found the root of the problem. I've taken apart the transfer case and rear end and found no mechanical problems.Normal backlash for an 8 1/4, and no wear on the transfer case. To add to the the confusion the front shaft is out and all of the above listed issues are still occuring. Any thoughts? The transfer case is ok, and so is the rear end. I have the front drive shaft out, and the engine mounts are good. Could it still be in the front end? I have uneven tire wear (it appears as if the tires are cupping). The transmission shifts good, and doesn't slip. I'm finding it hard to believe that it could be in the transmission or rear end. Any thoughts? Please Help!
i own a repair shop,and the front axle joints are bad in it,,this is what causes this to happen you need to check them and see how bad they are,because they will have to be replaced on it but if i did one of them,id do both sides ,and just replace the whole axle it cheaper than buying just a CV joint,,good luck,,i hope this help,s.
