Ripping Chain
I have a 1997 Nissan Sentra and the timing chain needs to be replaced.?
The mechanic says that the engine needs to be taken out in order to put the chain back in since the engine is not facing vertically but side to side. He says the labor will cost $1500 but the chain is cheap. Does anyone know if this mechanic is ripping me off or is this true? Thanks in advance for any response 
I have had many Sentras and can tell you that you do indeed need to take the motor out to replace the timing chain, the side of the motor sits too far against the side of the engine bay to replace it where it is. Look under the hood and on the passenger side of the car, where all the belts are, under all those belts and the under the covers on the side of the motor is where the timing chain is, try sticking your arm in there and tell me if the motor needs to come out or not. There is just no other option, getting a timing chain in the motor correctly and aligning all the timing marks and so on is a very precise and tedious task, not something that should be attempted in cramped conditions. If it makes you feel any better shop around look for someone with a lower shop rate but be weary of anyone quotes you too low of a price because you know that they call you half way through the job while your car is already torn apart and tell you that it is going to cost more for unanticipated labor. Also whatever you do don't listen to the guy that said timing chains don't go bad, they most certainly do and once it happens the results are catastrophic.
